About the event
This film permiere is a tribute to author, playwright, poet and actress, Ntozake Shange, creator of the iconic literary choreopoem and award-winning theatre masterpiece, “For Colored Girl’s Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf.” Featuring a cast of over thirty Philly-based intergenerational Black women and girls representing a wide range of performance art. The film seeks to answer the question, individually and collectively: What does sing a Black girl’s song mean to us? The range of answers are from Sistahs in the regular grind of the entertainment industry to those whose daily lives encompass being students and teachers, employees and entrepreneurs. Structured as part interview docu-style and part performative piece, “Song of A Soul Sistah” celebrates our voices as the sounding board and the soundtrack that has started movements, challenged systems of oppression, and enabled us to be seen, heard, valued, respected, and validated. Together, we sing a Black Girl’s song, by us and for us.
